Hi friend,

Imagine with me, if only for a minute, a future where people triumph over the fossil fuel industry. A world where communities no longer have to worry about being poisoned by extracting, refining, and burning fossil fuels – and the climate crisis is a concern of the past.

In this world, governments stop giving oil giants a free ride, and fracked gas fields are gradually replaced with solar farms, wind turbines, and sustainable buildings – all powered by a just transition for workers. Concerns over air and water pollution disappear. Global temperatures slow their rise, level off, and the climate stabilizes. This future, OUR future, is within reach – but only if we have the strength (and a plan!) to wrest it from the hands of the fossil fuel industry.

That’s where SAFE Cities comes in: a movement of neighbours, local groups, and elected officials taking a Stand Against Fossil Fuel Expansion to protect communities and address the climate crisis.

Together, we’re calling for, legislating, and ultimately... passing laws that make it illegal to build new fossil fuel infrastructure. And we’re winning. Will you join us?

JOIN SAFE CITIES

Over our 20-year existence, Stand.earth has helped stop dozens of fossil fuel projects by working closely with communities on the ground – but we’re only a team of 35 people. On our own, we can’t address the climate crisis and help communities threatened by fossil fuels around the globe at the scale and pace needed. That’s why we’ve decided to make all our digital organizing and advocacy tools, along with our campaign playbook, available to anyone in the US or Canada who wants to Stand Against Fossil Fuel Expansion and pass SAFE policies in their community.

A handful of communities across the US are already leading the way, by deploying local land use powers to pass policies that reduce explosion, spill, and pollution risks. As they’re keeping their communities safe, they’re also tackling the climate crisis by keeping fossil fuels in the ground.

Now it’s time to grow these successes into an international movement of SAFE cities, SAFE counties and, heck, even SAFE nations that have all taken important steps towards ending fossil fuel expansion. Much like the nuclear non-proliferation treaty of 1970 was strengthened by a global movement of nuclear-free cities, a wave of SAFE cities and communities around the world will give strength to an emerging non-proliferation treaty around fossil fuel extraction.

The oil, gas, and coal industry has been fighting the world’s transition to cleaner, safer energy for decades. Enough is enough – it’s time to put a stop to their desperate attempts to extract every last bit of fossil fuels lying under the earth’s surface. No one person or community can do this alone – but if enough of us join together, we can spur a serious shift away from fossil fuels and toward new, clean renewable sources of energy. We can become an unstoppable force of change that builds a better future for all.

Will you join us and make your community the next SAFE area? Our team will be there to offer key support every step of the way.

I won’t lie to you. Going up against industry lobbyists and passing SAFE policies isn’t always easy. The goals of the SAFE Cities movement are hugely ambitious, and the fossil fuel industry will fight us every step of the way. If we want to achieve a stable climate and healthy communities, we’ll need to summon all our tenacity, creativity, and sense of community.

But you know what? I’m not worried. The Stand.earth community is more than 450,000 people strong and growing, and together we’ve already blocked more than 20 pipeline and oil train projects, protected over 65 millions acres of forest, and shifted billions in corporate purchasing to more sustainable sources.

We’ve done what people thought was impossible before, and now, with our future and the future of our planet at stake, we’re going to take on the fossil fuel industry and do it again.

We’re going to make the world SAFE. Together. Will you join us and stand against fossil fuel expansion in your community?

With hope and determination,

Liz McDowell
