Great News: We stopped Big Oil

We got some major news today but we have to keep the pressure up. Can you help? r1

PAOV -

We got some big news today. Thanks to our people-powered push, we kept Big Oil out of Canada’s Net Zero Advisory Panel.

I’ll share more in just a second but before I do, I just wanted to say that this news is only possible thanks to the support of people like you.

If you’re able, can you make a $3.50 contribution today to support 350.org’s hard-hitting campaigns for climate action in Canada?

Late last year, after the government announced Bill C-12, their Net-Zero Accountability Act, we launched a campaign pushing to make that bill stronger.

One of our core demands about C-12 was banning fossil fuel executives and lobbyists from the Net Zero Advisory Panel the bill would create. Today, Trudeau’s Environment Minister Jonathan Wilkinson released the names of that panel and I’m happy to report that there are no members from Shell, Suncor or any of the other Big Oil companies that have undermined climate action for decades.1

We did this. Together. After thousands of people signed the petition calling on federal leaders to be brave and strengthen Bill C-12, the topic was debated... in the House of Commons.

Some MPs, such as NDP Environment Critic Laurel Collins, heard and echoed our demand to ban fossil fuel executives. On the other hand, Conservative MPs, doubled down and insisted that Big Oil CEOs deserved a seat at the table.

But by staying strong and pushing the Liberals to choose a side, people across the country made it clear that we wouldn’t accept climate policies written by Big Oil.

Of course, we still have a lot of work to do. The fossil fuel industry will continue doing what it can to slow down and weaken climate action. But, today we did something that felt impossible for a long time in Canadian politics, we kept Big Oil out of the room.

Now, it’s time to keep the pressure up.

We have big plans to take our campaign for a Just Transition Act to the next level. It will only be possible with support from people like you.

Please make a $3.50 contribution — or whatever you can afford — to support 350.org’s campaign work in Canada.

With your help, we will hit the ground running right away on the heels of this victory. We’re going to bring our demands for a Just Transition Act right to Minister Wilkinson’s doorstep.

Thank you for standing in this movement with us. Today’s major victory is only possible because tens of thousands of people just like you spoke up.

In solidarity,

Cam Fenton

P.S. We probably wouldn’t have won this fight if it hadn’t been championed in the House of Commons by Laurel Collins, the NDP’s Environment Critic. Send her a note of thanks for her work on Twitter.
