Hi friend,
It's Elliot Page here. You might know me from the movie Juno or the Netflix show Umbrella Academy.
Today, I’m writing to share with you why I’m supporting Stand.earth, and I’m asking you to join me.
GIVE A (DOUBLED) GIFTLast year I co-directed a documentary about the impacts of environmental racism. Our film, “There’s Something in the Water”, is a terrifying look at ecological disasters in Indigenous and Black communities in my home province of Nova Scotia in Canada.
Toxic industries, pollution, and climate change disproportionately affect Black and Indigenous people. These communities who have no say in industrial mega projects are the ones who suffer the most.
We need to talk about this more. And we need to work together to stop it.
This is why I care so much about the work that the... Stand.earth is doing. They’re working to fight climate change and protect wild spaces, while supporting Indigenous land and water protectors and other frontline activists around the world who are standing up to the oil and gas industry.
In just the last year alone, they helped stop what would have been the largest tar sands mine in the world and worked with Indigenous communities in the Amazon’s Sacred Headwaters to put the global spotlight on destructive oil development in their ancestral homelands. Over the years they’ve helped stop dozens of fossil fuel projects, protected millions of acres of forest, and successfully taken on megacorporations like Procter & Gamble, Shell, and Starbucks.
Not only do they fight for just causes, but Stand has a track record of success that is, quite frankly, astonishing, and they're doing all this and more with a team of less than 50 people on a shoe-string budget.
The Stand team is putting together their plans for 2021 right now – they want to do a lot more in the new year, but they'll need more funds. With their year-end fundraising deadline coming up, your support today will make a huge difference in what’s possible next year:
It is horrific to read of Indigenous communities being displaced by toxic oil and gas projects, the last old growth giants logged in the coastal rainforests of British Columbia, and arctic ecosystems ruined forever by oil drilling.
But I’m also full of hope. People all over the world are rising up to say this can’t go on. And organizations like Stand are helping to make that happen.
By supporting frontline communities in the fight to stop fossil fuel expansion, Stand and this community are bringing transformative change – grounded in cultural and ecological integrity – that respects the rights and territories of Indigenous People.
Stand.earth is working on some seriously important and overlooked environmental issues – and winning. If you can, please help support them with a (doubled) donation, so they can continue this crucial work.
With hope,
Elliot Page
