Some days I have to pinch myself

Dear Narwhals,
At this time three years ago, I wasn’t getting much sleep.
My co-founder Carol Linnitt and I were working around the clock to launch The Narwhal on a shoestring budget. It was a mammoth task, made all the more difficult by the fact we were pioneering a model for non-profit journalism in Canada from scratch.
In the depths of my sleep deprivation, I came across a card with an illustration of narwhal on it that said: “We are an impossibility in an impossible universe.”
Three years later, I still have that card on my fridge. And I looked at it earlier this week, with a giant grin on my face after we received some incredible news.
Less than three years after launching, The Narwhal’s Sarah Cox has won a World Press Freedom Award for her tenacious coverage of B.C.’s beleaguered Site C dam.
“Sarah’s work on Site C in bringing to light issues of public interest demonstrates again that journalism matters,” World Press Freedom Canada president Shawn McCarthy said. “And that independent media like The Narwhal play a vital role in the media landscape.”
Sarah’s outstanding reporting would never have been possible without the support of thousands of readers like you. Will you join us today in becoming a monthly member of The Narwhal to help make more award-winning journalism possible?
As if we didn’t already have a reason to pop the champagne, we also just received nine award nominations from the Canadian Association of Journalists — the second-most of any news organization in the entire country!
Want to catch up on our best work of the year? Read the award-nominated articles and more in our brand-spanking-new 2021 print edition. Bonus: for a limited time, we’re offering all new monthly members a copy of our exclusive annual magazine.
Our biggest dream for The Narwhal was to redefine what’s possible in the Canadian journalism landscape, and this week is proof that when you restore the connection between journalists and the public they serve, anything is possible.
Thank you for all of you’ve done to make The Narwhal a reality. We raise our tusks to you!
Emma Gilchrist
Editor-in-chief
P.S. We are only ordering 1,000 copies of our print edition, so make sure to become a member today to ensure you get this beautiful coffee-table edition of The Narwhal, while helping to create more hard-hitting journalism about Canada’s natural world.
