Good things grow in Ontario

Good things grow in Ontario r1 ... Editor-in-chief Emma Gilchrist holds a Narwhal tote bag along a dock
“An impressive digital platform that brings readers a combination of hard-hitting investigative reporting, environmental coverage and gorgeous visuals.”

“It fills a hole in mainstream media coverage of the environment.”

You can probably guess who those judges were talking about. We are thrilled to share that The Narwhal has been named the best digital publication of our size in the country by the Digital Publishing Awards (kinda like the Oscars of online journalism in Canada.)

Even more exciting news? On the heels of the big win, we are giddy to grow beyond our western roots and bring our reader-funded, award-winning journalism to Ontario.

Whether it’s threats to the Greenbelt or rollbacks of environmental laws, we’ve been hearing over and over again from all of you that Ontario needs more investigative reporting about the natural world — and we’re eager to expand eastward.

Here’s where you come in: we know that our success in Ontario will be driven by the depth of the relationships we build with our new readers there. So we’ve hatched an ambitious plan to sign up 10,000 new Ontario readers in the next two weeks.

Journalists need to forge meaningful connections to the communities they serve and we’re on a mission to deepen our connections with the people who value high-quality journalism in Ontario.

As a non-profit and ad-free online magazine, we rely on the power of word of mouth to spread the message about our work.

Will you share the good news with your friends and family in Ontario, and ask them to subscribe to this free newsletter? Bonus: if you get three people to sign up, we’ll send you a limited-edition Narwhal tote bag.

We know the goal of signing up 10,000 new Ontario readers in the next two weeks is shooting for the stars. But as we’ve learned time and time again, we’re capable of all sorts of miracles when we join forces with our fellow Narwhals.

Will you help connect more Ontarians with The Narwhal?

Take care and start spreading the news,

Arik Ligeti
