Dear Friend,

For over half a century, the BCCLA has been a staunch defender of human rights and civil liberties. From the disproportionate impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, to the deadly tragedies of police violence, to the ongoing onslaught of the opioid crisis - the past year revealed deep, layered, and systemic inequities in our society.

Through it all, our small but passionate team persisted in the fight to uphold freedom and justice across Canada, particularly for the most vulnerable and oppressed.

Our 2020 Annual Report is here, with stories of the work for liberty and justice you helped make possible.

In her letter inside this Report, our Executive Director Harsha Walia notes that “the BCCLA has always issued a... clarion call during crisis.” Throughout 2020, the BCCLA has focused our attention on holding governments and people in power to account.

We launched a lawsuit against the RCMP Commissioner, and also worked in a powerful coalition to demand a ban on police street checks across BC. We went to court to protect the free speech of frontline healthcare workers and won at the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal. We also forced a pause on a new form of involuntary detention for youth experiencing an overdose in BC.

As one of Canada’s oldest and most steadfast defenders of civil liberties and human rights for all, we’re taking our fight for justice and liberty well into 2021 and the years to come.

Change doesn’t happen in a week, a month, or a year – change takes time, and the BCCLA is here for the long haul to see these changes through.

Sincerely,

Iman Baobeid (she/her/hers)
Communications & Outreach Manager
