A code red for humanity

Dear Paov,

Today, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released their latest report on the state of the climate crisis.

The key takeaway was extremely clear. The world’s top climate scientists have confirmed that the Earth is getting hotter more rapidly than predicted. We have the solutions to prevent further harm to people and the planet, but only if we act now. It’s time to put these solutions into action. And we must start by putting an immediate end to fossil fuel expansion.

That means, in Canada, we simply cannot afford another minute of the Trudeau government’s delay tactics when it comes to the climate crisis. Do you agree?

Add your name to the petition to call on Trudeau to act with the urgency the climate emergency demands by stopping fossil fuel expansion and accelerating a Just Transition to 100% renewable energy now.

UN Secretary General António Guterres described today’s IPCC report as a... "code red for humanity," and asserted that this report “must sound a death knell for coal and fossil fuels, before they destroy our planet."

This is an embarrassing moment for Justin Trudeau who is running out of ways to validate his claims that Canada can lead on climate action while expanding the tar sands. On top of that, under Trudeau’s leadership, Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions have increased every year since the Paris Agreement -- Canada is the only G7 country where that is the case.

If you, like me, believe that Trudeau’s strategy of delaying necessary action on the climate emergency is extremely dangerous and outright unacceptable, sign the petition now and call on him to act like we’re in a climate emergency.

Although the IPCC report is difficult to process in this moment as wildfires rage across the country and our communities come in and out of extreme heat waves, it also offers hope. The IPCC has made it clear that humanity is at a fork in the road. We don’t have to resign ourselves to a future where the climate crisis gets worse and worse.

Change is possible if we rise to the challenge of this moment and demand real leadership from our political leaders.

With an election around the corner, it’s time to make sure that our politicians are listening and ready to step up to be the climate champions that we need. Over 15,000 people have already signed this petition, if thousands more sign it, we will send a message that Trudeau can’t ignore.

Onwards,
Atiya
