Who will drive change this election?

Who will drive change this election? r1 ... Election 2021 Dear Friend,

Rumours of a looming federal election are growing, and it is widely expected that one will be called in the coming weeks.

This election, we’re working to make sure that the incoming government is accountable to people, not profit. We know that our communities are healthiest when people hold the balance of power because we can more effectively fight for policies that care for the land, water, our communities, and our shared health. Our engagement is necessary to ensure our future reflects the deep, society-wide changes we need to address the competing crises we face.

Our elected leaders continue to subsidize and rely on fossil fuel extraction, even as the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change told us this week – once again – that we’re past a point of no return with climate change impacts. Meanwhile, pharmaceutical companies have kept up their relentless lobbying, blocking our access to medicines we need. Corporations prioritizing profit in long-term care homes continue to give dangerously inadequate care to our loved ones while the federal government passes the work of updating LTC standards over to the private sector accreditation.

If you support our efforts to end corporate capture of our governments, please consider donating and becoming a member today. Donate now Together, we can send a clear signal to the next government that they must put people and the planet before private profits. Throughout the upcoming election period, we will be pushing for progress on the key issues we’ve been committed to for years: climate justice, water, pharmacare, long-term care, and proportional representation.

At the same time, chapters and members across the country plan to directly engage candidates in their ridings, at town halls, and at candidate events. They will also talk to their neighbours and families about what is important to them in this election.

Our team is busy creating pamphlets and online resources with key questions for candidates and background to support this work. We’ll also lend a hand in writing letters to editors, and host calls and conversations with our members to make sure they have what they need.

Can you chip in to help us produce, print, and ship these materials? Click here to donate.

Elections give us a chance to shape our future and shift the priorities of those who make decisions impacting all of us. I hope you’ll join us.

With gratitude,
Christina Warner, Director of Campaigns and Organizing
