Dear Friend,

This is it – we are going to court to face the RCMP Commissioner.

In November 2020, we sued the RCMP Commissioner for her extreme delay which prevented the release of a report by the Civilian Review and Complaints Commission (CRCC) into RCMP spying. The CRCC report found that the RCMP spied on climate organizations and Indigenous Nations opposed to the Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipeline project.

On September 21st & 22nd, we’re going to court.

We are the first to take the RCMP to court on this issue, and we need your support before we go there. Will you make a donation of $30 to support our lawsuit?

In court, pro bono counsel Paul Champ and I will argue that the RCMP Commissioner’s unreasonable delay in responding to the CRCC report breached her obligations under the RCMP Act and violated the BCCLA’s Charter right to freedom of expression.

Enough is enough. We had to wait nearly... 7 years for a response to our complaint about RCMP spying on pipeline protestors. This is unacceptable. The RCMP Commissioner should not be allowed to delay the complaints process by sitting on a report for years on end.

We’re not the only ones who have experienced this kind of delay. Extreme delays have been the hallmark of the CRCC complaints process for over a decade. As of January 18, 2021, there were still 156 CRCC reports awaiting a response from the RCMP Commissioner.

That is 156 individuals, families, and groups waiting for justice. They deserve better than this.

Will you make a donation of $30 today to support our lawsuit and demand better?

Your donation will help us stand up for the groups that are waiting for an answer to their complaints, show up to court, and hold this powerful institution accountable.

On September 21st, we will be in court to stand up for what is right. Regardless of what happens, we are here to see things through.

Thank you for being on our side.

Sincerely,

Jessica Magonet (she/her)
