Dear Friend,

Over the last week we’ve told you about the work that the BCCLA has done to end prolonged, indefinite solitary confinement. We’ve told you how this practice has continued in different ways.

We want to end this practice, once and for all. Today, I’m writing to you with an important announcement: we’re suing to end long-term solitary confinement, no matter what it’s called.

We want to end prolonged, indefinite lockdowns and restrictive movement routines, which are just solitary confinement by another name and need to stop now.

Make a donation to support our lawsuit today.

In 2019, we had a historic win in the BC Court of Appeal: the court ruled that the federal laws that permitted solitary confinement in Canada’s federal prisons were inhumane and unconstitutional.

Despite this, wardens continue to isolate people in long-term solitary confinement in federal prisons. They routinely lock down... entire institutions or set highly restrictive schedules. They isolate people to their cells for days, weeks, and months at a time, without meaningful human contact.

It doesn’t matter what it’s called. This treatment is dehumanizing and amounts to torture. It needs to end.

For society to change, we need to tackle problems on multiple fronts. We’re tackling this problem in the courts, and you can join us. Please make a donation of $50 today, and stand up for the rights of people in prison.

Court processes are long and complicated. They require resources, creative tactics, and time. With your donation, we can bring forward our best arguments, and have the best chance of winning.

We believe in this work. We want to bring meaningful change for people in prisons all across the country. I hope you’ll join us in this fight.

With hope,

Grace Pastine (she/her)
Litigation Director
