The city of Cranbrook is live trapping and relocating all beavers at... Idlewild Lake, with maybe a couple weeks until snowfall and freezing temperatures, this does not give the beavers enough time to rebuild a dam and a lodge. There won’t be enough food stored for the frigid winter months and these animals will most likely die. The only information we are able to conclude from the city’s comments is that this has more to do with cost of putting in decorative trees that served ultimately as a food source for the beavers, as well as flooding around the dam. Money should not get in the way of humane animal treatment. The city, as far as we are aware, has not tried to siphon water pooling by the dam. The city hasn’t worked with the public at all in the matter, trapping and relocating is not the solution. Why can’t we wait until spring to relocate the beavers to ensure they survive the winter. Moving these beavers also won’t prevent others from moving into the lodge, and it is illegal under federal and provincial law to destroy a beaver dam. Anyone who signs this petition is against the impending relocation of these animals and the lack of communications from the City of Cranbrook.
