CoDev 2021 Winter Appeal

To all of our Friends and Supporters who have already donated, we thank you. We know we ask a great deal of you...your time, your dollars, your item donations, but we appreciate every bit of your assistance. We know this year as last, has had its challenges.
We appreciate you.

Dear Friend and Supporter of CoDev,

Colombia is experiencing one of its worst social crises in decades. Tens of thousands of citizens took to the streets in a National General Strike that began on April 28 and lasted for 50 consecutive days. During that time, and the weeks that followed there were more than 4,600 reports of police violence, 28 reports of sexual assault, and 82 victims of aggression by Colombian police., More than 200 were disappeared and about 2,000 were arbitrarily detained. To date, some young protesters are still being threatened, disappeared, and murdered. This violence adds to the growing numbers of selective killings of social leaders, environmental and union activists, land and human rights defenders, and massacres Colombia has witnessed since the 2016 Peace Accords.

Forty-two percent of Colombians earn less than US$90 per month, and 1 in 4 Colombians under the age of 28 is unemployed. And yet, the people remain undeterred. While initially a protest against President Ivan Duque’s proposed tax reforms, the National Strike Committee is planning new action to address broader needs. The people are asking for basic, guaranteed income for 1.7 million citizens, free public university, a strengthening of the public health system, more job opportunities in formal labour sectors, and the decriminalization of abortion. Our partners, NOMADESC, SINTRACUAVALLE and, FECODE - even though they face stigmatization, harassment, and death threats every day - have been in the streets and on the front lines in a show of collective strength, solidarity, and partnership. And our Canadian partners and supporters have been with them in spirit.

Our Sintracuavalle Union was present at today’s National Strike. We are convinced that raising our voices will be a fundamental pillar of the change that our country needs. We march for our country to improve. (Sintracuavalle).

CoDev’s partners have made a difference in 2021 in the face of multiple challenges, both in Latin America and here, in Canada . But there is still more to do. The fallout from the pandemic and its effects will be felt for the foreseeable future. With your support, CoDev will work to strengthen the network of partners working to address these challenges. It’s what we do. Your donation of $50, $75 or even $100 will enable CoDev to support our core programs:
  • Building broad-based support for public education – working with teachers, students, and indigenous groups across North America and Latin America to defend public education
  • Protecting labour rights – working with women workers to address their fundamental rights to occupational health and safety
  • Strengthening community-led development – creating diverse networks of community leaders defending their human rights
  • Involving Canadians in global issues – working with Canadians to build support for social, economic, and environmental alternatives such as fair trade
Most important, your continued support signals to our partners that we are all part of a global struggle to transform our communities into safe, healthy, sustainable places in which to live and thrive. Join us as we work towards global justice.

In Solidarity,
