People often ask me why the BCCLA is so passionate about bringing an end to the practice of prolonged solitary confinement, and why we continue to bring this case to the courts.

The government claims that long-term solitary confinement has been banned. But wardens at federal prisons continue to isolate people in long-term solitary confinement by using lockdowns and “restrictive movement routines.”

This is not right, and we... cannot stand idly by. Solitary confinement is debilitating, dehumanizing and must stop now.

The BCCLA has done years of advocacy and litigation work, seeking meaningful change in the prison system. In October, we took an important step forward in our fight to end prolonged solitary confinement in prions – we are going back to court.

Join us at our online panel event on November 24. Panelists Jen Metcalfe from Prisoners’ Legal Services, poet and activist El Jones, and BCCLA Senior Counsel Megan Tweedie will tell us about prison conditions in Canada, and how they intersect with other issues in our society. We’ll also raise funds to support BCCLA’s fight in the courts to end solitary confinement.

We look forward to seeing you there.

Sincerely,

Sambriddhi Nepal (she/her)
