Dear Friend,

“Why do you do the work you do?”

Throughout my 4 years working at the BCCLA, I often get asked this question. At panels, during media interviews, in day-to-day conversations with my loved ones.

My answer? I do this work because I care.

As the Policy Director, I see the impact of our work hands-on. And this year in particular, our work on policing made a huge impact.

In our fight to end racist and illegal police street checks, we have seen first-hand that governments are not addressing root causes of problems. Instead, they criminalize social issues and over-police and under-protect communities.

In our lawsuit against the RCMP Commissioner, we argued that the systemic delays in the RCMP complaints process completely undermines police accountability.

Through our work in public legal education, we’ve seen that the... people, especially youth, are more passionate than ever about stepping up and standing on the right side of history.

We want to continue our good work this year by redeveloping our educational resources, and we are raising $30,000 to cover the cost. This holiday season, would you make a donation so we can bring more information to the public?

With your support, we can:

  • Produce more public legal educational resources
  • Deliver public workshops and presentations including our annual youth conference
  • Create a new Police Complaints guide
  • Produce videos and factsheet contents

Our supporters like you are kind, generous, and care deeply about the world they live in. They believe in solidarity as an act of care.

You can join this group of supporters. Join us in showing that acts of care can and will overpower injustice.

Would you make a donation today so we can bring more information to the public?

Thank you for joining our work to bring civil liberties for all.

Sincerely,

Meghan McDermott {she/her)

Policy Director

P.S. We are raising $30,000 to develop and update our public legal education resources. Help us bring knowledge to more people – donate today.
