Paov,
We have been working with many of you to organize the national Day of Action for a Just Transition on March 12th. By now I’m sure you’ve read so many emails from us about the need for a just transition that you’ve got the main points memorized. But it’s easy to forget that many of our friends, family and neighbours aren’t yet familiar with the concept. If our movement is going to win, we need to bring them up to speed.
Last week we launched a new online action to make it easy for you to tell your communities about the just transition, and the urgent need for a Just Transition Act, by sending letters to the editors of local and national newspapers. The just transition is about shifting off fossil fuels at the rapid pace the climate crisis demands while making sure no worker or community gets left behind. It’s a positive vision we can rally our communities around.
This might seem old-school, but publishing a Letter to the Editor is an incredibly powerful and easy way to reach people in your area beyond your immediate community. As more and more Canadians realize that we need to phase out fossil fuels fast, it’s crucial that we bring our vision for a just transition to as many people as possible.
It’s been so moving to read letters by people who want just transition legislation so their relatives who work in oil and gas can get good, unionized work in the green economy, and grandparents who want a Just Transition Act so their grandkids have a safe future. Personal stories have power and with Parliament recently back in session, this is a key moment to build momentum for real action by making your voice heard.
Onwards,
Chris
