Friends,
Last Friday, the Trans Mountain corporation announced the cost of the publicly-owned Trans Mountain pipeline skyrocketed to $21.6 billion. Minutes later, the Trudeau government announced it will stop further public funding to the pipeline. This is a huge victory for our movement. We’ve spent over a year calling on Trudeau to defund Trans Mountain — our pressure finally paid off.
This victory demonstrates what the climate movement can achieve when we act together. With the latest IPCC report set to be released February 28th, we have a critical opportunity to organize and deliver climate solutions that truly meet the urgency of the crises we face.
There’s so much to take stock of at this moment. That’s why 350 Canada and the Council of Canadians are coming together on March 1st to host a conversation with climate leaders about the next steps for our movement for climate action. Will you join us?
Here are the call details:
WHAT: A Conversation with Climate Leaders: Where do we go next?
WHEN: Tuesday, March 1 - 4pm PT / 5pm MT / 6pm CT / 7pm ET / 8pm AT / 8:30pm NT
You don’t want to miss out. RSVP now to save your seat >>
The IPCC report is prepared by world's top scientists to spell out the urgency of the climate emergency and the action needed to curb the worst impacts of the crisis. On this call, Anjali Appadurai, Organizing Director at Climate Emergency Unit, will walk us through the implications of the latest IPCC report due on February 28th. Then, Avi Lewis, Associate Professor at UBC, will lead a discussion on the political moment we're in and what it means for climate action. We will then talk through what this means for the climate movement and how we organize to win critical Just Transition legislation that transitions our communities off fossil fuels fast.
The business case for TMX has crumbled. Since Day 1, the Indigenous-led climate movement made it clear how senseless it is to move forward with this project in the midst of a climate emergency. As one of the hundreds of people that were arrested for standing against TMX, it is incredible to be part of the end of the fossil fuel era. Now, we need Trudeau and his government to take the best business decision on the table: cut their losses with TMX, and invest in a just and rapid transition off of fossil fuels to support people, workers and communities.
In solidarity,
Atiya
