New resources from the Coalition for the Human Rights of Indigenous Peoples
CFSC is an active member of the Coalition for the Human Rights of Indigenous Peoples. The Coalition is pleased to two release two new educational fact sheets (PDF):
- Indigenous... Peoples and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals
- The United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the UN Sustainable Development Goals
These two fact sheets explain what the Sustainable Development Goals are, where they came from, and their relevance to Indigenous peoples (in particular in Canada).
To learn more about the Sustainable Development Goals as they relate to Indigenous peoples you can watch an expert symposium taking place April 6-7 online. Find out more and register at: https://DeclarationCoalition.com.
Demonstration in Stockholm, Sweden, against the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Feb 27, 2022. CC-BY 4.0 Frankie Fouganthin
Russia has invaded Ukraine. What are alternatives to a military response?
Since we last wrote, Russia has invaded Ukraine. We join the world community in condemning this act in the strongest of terms and in calling for peace. War is a futile problem-solving strategy. It does not lead to peace, democracy, or security. Its predictable failure comes at tremendous cost to human lives, development, and wellbeing.
When a situation happens like Russia invading the Ukraine, a question inevitably arises in the hearts of those who support justice and peace: What are the alternatives to a violent response? We address this question in a blog post on our website https://QuakerService.ca/UkraineAlternatives
If you are interested in discussing these and other peace and conflict issues please join our free workshop series: https://QuakerService.ca/Register

File your 2021 Peace Tax Return
Conscience Canada is inviting you to file a Peace Tax Return to express your conscientious objection to paying military taxes. There are options for you to withhold all or part of your taxes that would go toward the military (and thus possibly to killing) or to state an objection to military taxation but not withhold any of the taxes you owe.
Caroline Balderston Parry leading Friends in a song at Canadian Yearly Meeting in session, 2016.
Giving thanks for the Spirit in the life of Caroline Balderston-Parry
We join in celebrating the life of dear Friend Caroline Balderston Parry of Ottawa Meeting. Caroline was a long-time supporter of CFSC and a faithful member of our Meeting for Worship during the pandemic. Active within Canadian Yearly Meeting in many roles, Caroline was an artist, mom, organizer, and always had both a song and tear close at hand! We thank her for sharing her end of life journey with us.
Ottawa Monthly Meeting will be holding a Memorial Meeting for Worship to celebrate Caroline's life. The Memorial Meeting will be online at 2pm Eastern time on March 26. If you would like to attend, please send an email to:
