Paov,
We’re at a crossroads when it comes to climate action in this country. Big Oil billionaires and their allies are doing everything they can to profit from this moment of crisis, using the war in Ukraine as an excuse to push for new pipelines1 and rehash old talking points about Canada’s “ethical oil”.2
But at the same time, a growing number of people are realizing that the best way to ensure both energy security and a safe future is to end our dependence on fossil fuels once and for all. That’s why we need a Just Transition to a 100% renewable energy economy and we need it now. On Saturday, thousands of us in 50 different communities across the country, brought that positive vision for a green and just future to life as part of the Day of Action for a Just Transition.3
Momentum is on our side but we have to keep up the pressure. Paov, take the next step and sign our petition calling on the Trudeau government to pass the Just Transition Act by the end of 2022.
We know politicians are paying attention. I was kind of... surprised to see several Liberal MPs at day of action events on Saturday. After all, the focus of the day was their own failure on a key campaign promise. But these politicians know that there’s major public support for a just transition and they’re clearly worried that we’re exposing their failure to act. That's probably why, just three days before the day of action, Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson and Labour Minister Seamus O’Regan announced a new round of consultations on just transition legislation.4
It’s good to finally see some forward movement after years of grassroots pressure, but Trudeau first promised the Just Transition Act in 2019 and we still haven’t seen a first draft. That’s simply not good enough. As the IPCC climate report made clear a few weeks ago, the challenge of ending the fossil fuel era couldn’t be more urgent. We need action now.
The Day of Action on Saturday showed us how powerful we are when we act together. It’s clear we’ve got this government’s attention. Together, we can force our politicians to turn their words into action and ensure a just transition for all.
In solidarity,
Chris
