Dear Friend,
Do you remember what it was like to be in high school?
When I think about my school days, many fond memories come to mind. But I also remember times when I was confused. I grew up in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. I was always conscious of how some people were treated differently than others. But I didn’t know how to find out more about why that was happening. Or what people, including me, could do about it.
That is why I am passionate about the work we do. At the BCCLA, we have been partnering with schools, educators and community members to create resources for our youths.
DONATELet me tell you about a new project we are launching very soon. As the newest staff counsel in the Policy Department of the BCCLA, I have been working hard to create resources to equip youth to better understand their privacy rights when they use digital devices like smartphones and tablets.
Did you know that many young students are not aware of the legislation that governs their rights? That is what I found out during my workshop at our annual Youth Conference. Students are concerned that what they say and do online may be used to discipline them.
That is why I was encouraged by the enthusiasm of students and teachers to engage with these challenging topics. Students left the workshop more educated and know what to be mindful of to ensure their rights are not violated. Together, we built a base of knowledge that will empower them when encountering these issues in their daily lives.
We want to do this meaningful work for years to come. Would you make a donation today, so we can continue to equip young people to stand up for their rights?
The work of defending civil liberties and human rights never stops. With your gift, you can stand alongside us, support our principled stances, and join us in our commitment to take on big fights for justice.
Thank you for being on our side.
Sincerely,
Mara Selanders (she/her)
Staff counsel, Policy.
