May 1: National Day of Action for a Peoples Vaccine

May 1: National Day of Action for a People’s Vaccine r1 ... Dear friend,

Only solidarity can end the pandemic. That’s why on May 1, International Workers’ Day, we’ll be out in the streets calling for global vaccine justice. Will you join us?

Almost a dozen communities across Canada will be participating in the National Day of Action for a People’s Vaccine this Sunday, which we’re organizing alongside our partners in the Trade Justice Network.

We will be rallying in Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, Winnipeg, Hamilton, Kitchener-Waterloo, Guelph, Peterborough, Charlottetown, and St. Anthony (Newfoundland) to urge Canada to back the global call for lifting patents on vaccines and other medical products needed to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.

We urgently need to end Big Pharma’s stranglehold over global vaccine production. Around the world, there are still at least 2.8 billion people who have yet to get their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. That includes countless workers on the frontlines who have been denied access to affordable vaccines and medicines. Yet, much to Big Pharma’s delight, Canada has opposed efforts to suspend patents on vaccines at the World Trade Organization (WTO) for the last 18 months.

We also need to ensure that workers’ health and safety are protected during the pandemic – through measures such as paid sick days, living wages, indoor masking, and workplace ventilation standards – and to beat back the privatization agenda targeting our public healthcare system.

Faced with an unpredictable and rapidly-evolving virus, the labour movement slogan “an injury to one is an injury to all” is more relevant than ever.

I hope to see many of you on the streets on May 1st!

In solidarity,
