Sign now with a clickMy son has an incurable and progressive form of epilepsy... (Sturge-Weber Syndrome) and has faced many battles in his life. He’s now seven and nearly five years seizure free. We are thankful for this every day but will never be out of the woods. Seizures can return at anytime.
Noah is in the first grade in South Surrey and on March 31, 2022 was discharged, effective immediately, from Nursing Support Services (NSS).
NSS provides support for children with complex health care needs in schools and community settings. A nurse assigned to us worked with the school and us on a care plan and trained the staff on how to administer life saving rescue medication.
Because he hasn’t had a seizure in more than a year that has required rescue medication intervention, he no longer "qualifies" to be in their program.
This means a nurse won’t train the staff and will not allow the staff (under any circumstances) to give him rescue medication for any seizures lasting longer than three minutes (as staff operate under the nurses licence and they don’t want that liability).
When I approached the school to work with me and let me train them they said the district said no. Just no.
So now my son is at school for six hours per day with no rescue medication on site. If he has a seizure lasting longer than three minutes he needs rescue.
The protocol is to call 911 - however regular ambulances are not equipped to give this medication, often don’t know what the syndrome is and will take them to the nearest hospital, in our case Peach Arch, which is not equipped for children, certainly not with life threatening seizures.
In the event of a seizure and 911 is called it is very important that the school requests advanced life support ambulance so if he has a prolonged seizure he is taken to Surrey Memorial or Children’s. This is why it is so important to have staff trained to give him rescue while he’s at school for a seizure longer than three minutes. There are only TWO life support ambulances in all of Surrey.
