Dear Friend,

RSVP Today

When: Wednesday, July 13 @ 7:00 pm PST / 10:00 pm EST

Where: Online. RSVP to receive a link.

ASL interpretation and live captioning will be provided.

I’m thrilled to be moderating this panel discussion on privacy rights and freedom of expression in Canada featuring BCCLA lawyers Meghan McDermott and Mara Selanders, and special guests Spencer Izen and Jessica Kim of The Griffins’ Nest student newspaper.

Our panellists will speak on:

- Youth’s vulnerability to searches of their phones and other electronic devices in Canadian schools;

- Threats to student’s freedom of expression and Spencer and Jessica’s fight for a Student Press Freedom Act in British Columbia;

- The current law governing police... authority to search cell phones; and

- Your privacy rights at Canadian borders, including the most recent updates on bills going through Canadian parliament.

The BCCLA gratefully acknowledges our funders, the Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA) and The Law Foundation of Ontario. We are excited to premiere a new animated short video about youth and smartphones in Canadian classrooms at this event thanks to their support.

Thank you for supporting the BCCLA. We look forward to seeing you there!

Sincerely,

Katherine Benson (she/her)
Summer Law Student
