The UK just experienced the hottest day ever in its history. Fires erupted...and London is still burning.
Despite our code red climate crisis, major polluters are ramping UP oil and gas production, and banks are INCREASING investment in fossil fuels.
We have to stop them. Our survival depends on it. But the good news is SumOfUs was made for this fight.
Last year, we pushed one of the top ten funders of fossil fuel projects worldwide, TD Bank, to commit to net-zero carbon emissions. First we brought a major shareholder resolution to Canada’s largest bank’s annual general meeting to stop funding fossil fuel expansion projects. Then we asked tens of thousands of you to keep up public outcry while we built a coalition of investors and employees to pressure the bank from the inside until shareholders couldn’t ignore our call.
And it worked! TD Bank made huge changes internally, including hiring a new Director of Sustainable Finance and making a bold climate plan to achieve net-zero by 2050.

The latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report found that emissions from current and planned fossil fuel projects will make temperatures soar by more than 3C. It’s a terrifying to imagine it can get any hotter than it's been this week across Europe – and a final warning that we’re heading towards catastrophic consequences. Unless we act quickly, heat, fire, storms, flooding, and drought will soon destroy life as we know it.
While scientists shout from the rooftops, corporate giants are carrying on with business as usual, hoping to continue profiting for as long as they possibly can off the demise of our planet.
But what they haven’t planned for is our massive push to buy shares to stop more fossil fuel projects and demand change from within.
Momentum is on our side. Shareholders in Chevron, ExxonMobil and more have successfully demanded the companies dramatically reduce emissions. And last year, in addition to the TB Bank win, we forced the European Central Bank and the Bank of England to adopt climate as a key consideration in policy and investments.
Together we can make the next round of defeats for the fossil fuel industry a reality – but it’s going to be a long, hard fight.
