You, me, and the majority of people across this country — 66% according to recent polls1 — want our government to do more to reduce emissions and prevent a runaway climate emergency. Every day we get closer to achieving Just Transition legislation that will make that a reality.
And today, millions of activists around the world are taking part in a Global Climate Strike with a rallying cry of #PeopleNotProfit.
But we still face a significant obstacle: Big Oil.
Using a well-honed playbook of slick public relations, back-room influence, and well-funded lobbying, fossil fuel CEOs in Canada are doing all they can to undermine progress toward climate justice at every turn.
But we are not powerless against them — especially when we all understand exactly what we’re up against. Friend, will you take three minutes right now to take our short quiz on the role of Big Oil in Canada?
TAKE THE QUIZRecently, I’ve been encouraged by the rising tide of MPs speaking out for a Just Transition and by the successes we’ve had in getting new oil and gas projects rejected — from offshore drilling in Nova Scotia to coal mines in the Rockies. I’m proud to share that thousands of people from coast to coast to coast have come together to confront Big Oil. And, in the process, support impacted workers and communities.
To me, these wins are proof positive of something I’ve learned in my many years as a Climate and Social Justice Campaigner: grassroots action — from people just like you, Friend — is an essential and effective counterweight to the outsized influence of big corporations.
But I’ve also learned that big corporations have many tricks up their sleeves. If we’re going to chart a new course — and we must — we need to keep up the pressure and force our elected officials to do the right thing. Now.
