Can we trust them?

Paov,
It seems like life is getting harder for everyone these days. With one notable exception.
The oil and gas industry is expected to make US$4 trillion in 2022, far exceeding their profits from previous years1. This comes at a time when nearly 6 million Canadians are struggling to put food on their tables2, and while communities across Atlantic Canada deal with the aftermath of Hurricane Fiona, a storm supercharged by the climate crisis Big Oil created.
Meanwhile, even as the cost of oil drops, these companies keep gouging customers with record-breaking gas prices3. We know where that cash is going and it isn’t good. A new analysis by the Pembina Institute makes it clear that Canadian oil and gas companies are spending essentially none of their record profits on implementing their “net zero” promises4.
We clearly can’t count on Big Oil to invest in a better future out of the goodness of their own hearts. It’s time to make polluters pay their fair share.
Spain, Greece, Italy, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria and the UK have already taken this basic step, but so far lobbyists have waged a successful campaign to make sure the Trudeau government doesn’t tax oil and gas companies’ excess profits in Canada. Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault says his office doesn’t plan to introduce a Windfall Profits Tax, despite strong calls for one from UN Secretary General António Guterres.5
Together, we have a real chance to force Trudeau and Guilbeault to side with people and the planet on this issue. The fossil fuel lobby’s credibility is crumbling in real time as it becomes clear that they have no intention of keeping their green pledges, happy to make as much profit as possible off of working peoples’ backs while the world burns.
In solidarity,
Chris

By the submission deadline on Friday we had collectively sent over 6,500 messages. Thank you to everyone who took action!
