Trudeau is skipping the UN climate summit

Call on Trudeau to tax Big Oil's excess profits to fund a just transition r1

The annual UN climate summit starts in 3 days, and despite this being a pivotal moment for climate action, Prime Minister Trudeau doesn’t plan to be there.1

Leaders from other high emitting nations like the US, UK, France, Germany and Brazil will all attend as the world races to tackle the climate emergency at the speed and scale required. Trudeau’s snub sends a strong message that he is still dodging his responsibility to deliver critical climate action.

Trudeau may say his government is doing enough, but we know his track record. That’s why we need to make sure he feels the pressure here in Canada by shaping the media narrative surrounding the climate summit. We’re using a new digital tool to make our voices heard in local and national newspapers across the country with op-eds calling on Trudeau to tax Big Oil’s excess profits and fund a rapid, just transition to 100% clean energy.

Take two minutes to send a letter to the editor making the case for a Windfall Profits Tax. Our letter tool includes pre-written templates and it will find local newspapers automatically based on... your postal code.

We can win this. On Monday, US President Joe Biden called for a Windfall Profits Tax,2 and the EU recently passed their own. Even the CEO of Shell acknowledged last month that taxing his industry’s windfall profits makes sense.3

Here at home our pressure is already working. Nearly 10,000 people have taken action as part of our #TaxBigOil campaign. Earlier this week, Member of Parliament Mike Morrice called on Trudeau to pass a Windfall Profits Tax in the House of Commons.4

Hundreds of people have submitted letters making the case to their communities, but we need to keep this wave going. Can you send a letter now?

It’s so inspiring to see these letters getting published across the country, knowing that we’re building steady pressure on Parliament to put people and the planet first. You can read some great examples of published letters here, here and here. I hope you’ll take a moment to add your voice.

In solidarity,
