90 per cent of gas piped into B.C. buildings comes from fracking, making it the third largest source of our province’s climate pollution.
The fact that we burn toxic, planet-heating gas in our homes, schools and workplaces and think nothing of it is a testament to the power of industry marketing campaigns that have branded gas as ‘clean’ and ‘natural'.
Powering buildings with clean electricity instead of dirty gas makes a lot of sense in a province like B.C with abundant hydro energy. While switching over existing buildings will take time, keeping gas out of the new ones being built should be step one,... just like we saw Washington state do earlier this month.
Unfortunately, B.C. is still making the problem worse. Last year, Horgan’s government allowed Fortis to connect 10,000 new customers to fossil gas lines. If we continue down the current path, the number of buildings that will need costly renovations down the line will only grow, emissions will keep rising and more deadly climate disasters will happen.
Fortis is using every trick in the book to keep customers and politicians hooked on the myth of ‘natural’ gas. Their aggressive lobbying is preventing B.C. from making the rapid switch to all-electric buildings that’s needed to meet our climate goals.
