news and action Saturday February 11, 2023
More salmon rivers and streams face imminent destruction.
Coastal GasLink is already $8 billion over budget, which means contractors are racing against the clock. But government regulators are missing in action. It’s fallen on Indigenous leaders and citizen monitors to do what they can to make pipeline construction crews follow the law.
It was Wet’suwet’en officials who busted Coastal GasLink twice at their botched pipeline crossing on the Clore River – crucial habitat for Skeena salmon and steelhead.
The pictures they took of excavators operating illegally in the river with no... sediment control forced an investigation by DFO fishery officers.
But why were regulators not on site to begin with? Internal e-mails show DFO decided last year to abandon monitoring on the biggest oil and gas project in Canadian history.
It’s a shocking failure of responsibility. Corporations like Coastal GasLink simply cannot be trusted to put clean water and fish protection ahead of their profits.
And based on Coastal GasLink’s history, there’s bound to be more they’re trying to hide.
Right now we’re trying to raise money to give local monitors more air time to look for permit violations. Helicopters are the best way to understand what’s really going on, and it was helicopter surveillance that brought to light the company’s sloppy work a few weeks ago.
If you haven’t already and would like to help, chip in what you can to get more eyes and ears on Coastal GasLink during this crucial construction window.
