We would not be hearing the truth

It would be an understatement to say these past few weeks have been the most intense and the most rewarding since we founded The Narwhal nearly five years ago.
First, we filed a lawsuit against the RCMP to take a stand for press freedom. Then, this past Friday, we found out The Narwhal picked up eight award nominations from the Canadian Association of Journalists — the second-most of any news organization in the country.
One nomination I’m particularly proud of is for the reconciliation award, for northwest B.C. reporter Matt Simmons’ dogged on-the-ground coverage on Wet’suwet’en territory.
Over the past year, Matt has visited the territory about a dozen times to report on the ongoing conflict over the construction of the Coastal GasLink pipeline — and he’s often been the only journalist present to document the actions of police and private security.
It’s that same steadfast commitment to telling stories that would otherwise go untold that prompted us to sue the RCMP over their arrest of photojournalist Amber Bracken in the fall of 2021, when she was reporting for The Narwhal from Wet’suwet’en territory.
As a small, non-profit news organization, we didn’t want to take one of the most powerful organizations in our country to court. But ultimately, we realized we had no other choice — because an absence of journalism leaves us all in the dark.
We wouldn’t be able to take this stand for press freedom — or send journalists like Amber and Matt to cover critically important environmental stories — without the ongoing support of thousands of members like you who make The Narwhal possible.
We are just 50 members away from reaching 5,000. Will you join the wave of readers helping us pull off award-worthy, independent journalism by donating whatever you can afford each month or year?
COUNT ME IN “Without your journalism we would not be hearing the truth,” one of our newest members wrote in to say.
If you believe in journalism that holds truth to power, please consider joining our pod today. If just one out of every 1,000 people reading this email becomes a member, we’ll unlock a new milestone for non-profit reporting in Canada.
Thank you for believing in what we do.
