Black women have... a 40% higher chance of dying from breast cancer than white women. Furthermore, Black women under 50 with breast cancer have a mortality rate double that of white women in the same age group. Currently, the national Canadian guidelines state that regular breast screenings should begin at age 50. Due to this, many women, especially women of colour, either do not attempt to receive a mammogram before the age of 50 or are denied mammogram services.
International studies in the US and UK have shown that Black women are disproportionately predisposed to early-onset triple negative breast cancer before the age of 50. Over 16% of breast cancer cases occur in women under 50. The longer the national guidelines remain at 50, the more women will not receive pivotal screening in time.
We, the undersigned, call on the Public Health Agency of Canada, the Ministry of Health and the Federal Government to lower the age of breast cancer screening to 40, to ensure all Canadians, particularly Black women, achieve the highest standard of healthcare.
