Dogwood News This Week: they bought a premier

news and action Saturday April 15, 2023 If you had to pick the worst corporate polluter in B.C. history, it’s probably Teck. The coal mining giant used to be the biggest political donor, too. Teck gave millions to the then-ruling BC Liberals, and a little taste now and then to the NDP.

Now those donations are illegal. So instead they bought a premier, the day he retired. How much will John Horgan earn shilling for Big Coal? Whatever amount, it’s on top of his gold-plated pension worth close to $150,000 a year.

Horgan admitted he was negotiating with Teck for months while still serving as an MLA. If you’re disgusted by B.C.’s revolving door of double-dipping ex-public servants going to work for the companies they... regulate, you’re not alone.

It’s all legal, because lawmakers make the laws. But it’s corrosive to our democracy. And the BC Liberals – oops, BC United – are no better when they’re in power. A fresh coat of paint can’t cover up the sickly smell of rot.

Now that Horgan’s gone, who will the NDP pick to run in his old riding of Langford-Juan de Fuca, or to replace Melanie Mark in Vancouver-Mount Pleasant? Will party members get a choice, or will the brass just name a candidate without a vote?

If you’re fed up with the orange team, keep an eye out for strong candidates running for the BC Greens. They have a chance to win seats in West Vancouver-Sea to Sky, Oak Bay-Gordon Head and a few more close races.

Then there’s the BC Conservatives, led by ex-BC Liberal minister John Rustad. They’ll siphon off some votes from right-wingers disgruntled with the party’s softer new brand. With an election next year, all the political machines are revving up.

Meanwhile, in the real world, important things are happening. Things most of our politicians seem oblivious to, as they dream about how to cash in on their time in government.
