“I appreciate the groundbreaking, unrelenting pressure on our elected officials to do better.”“Environmental destruction takes place behind closed doors that must be opened.”
A few days ago, I told you about a little experiment we embarked on here at The Narwhal: letting our reporters loose to file as many freedom of information requests as their hearts desired.
In just six months, our journalists filed a whopping 233 requests — and with those, they unearthed a veritable mountain of government documents to share with readers across the country.
But the reality is this kind of digging takes lots of time and no small amount of money. Those 233 requests? They cost The Narwhal $9,926.
So I turned to all of you, our loyal readers, to ask: would you help support our investigative journalism? The response has been overwhelming: more than 70 of you have stepped up to become members — while snagging a sweet Narwhal tote bag in the process.
We only have 40 tote bags left — will you be one of 40 people to step up and fund independent reporting on the environment you won’t read about anywhere else? It’s as simple as this: donate any monthly or annual amount you can afford and get a tote as a thank you. COUNT ME IN We don’t put a limit on our reporters’ freedom of information requests because we know they can lead to some pretty major stories that would otherwise go untold.
As many newsrooms in Canada cut staff, The Narwhal has doubled down on hiring reporters to do hard-hitting journalism — and we do it all as a small-but-mighty non-profit news organization that doesn’t run any advertising.
Here’s the thing: we’re only able to do this kind of important work because of readers just like you who step up to support environmental journalism they can’t find anywhere else.
By becoming a member of The Narwhal, you’re providing us with security in knowing we can support our reporters as they file dozens of requests and spend weeks poring over documents to hold the powerful accountable.
Thank you for believing in what we do.
