There are women that may not live to see next year because the recommended standard/baseline age to begin screening here in Ontario... is 50 years old. THIS IS TOO LATE!THE SCREENING GUIDELINES ARE OUTDATED!
My petition is a plea and a CALL TO ACTION to the Canadian Task Force on Preventive Health Care to change the breast screening age from 50 to age 40 throughout Canada. CTFPHC’s Patient Tool for Ages 40-49 states that "Breast Cancer Screening for Women Not at Increased Risk". This is not accurate. There are women (high rates of black women) in communities showing up in their 40’s or younger with metastatic breast cancer, triple negative and other aggressive subtypes.
Why are other provinces like British Columbia recommending that women 40 and over screen every 2 years but Ontario says 50? There is an exception placed on "high risk" individuals or those with a genetic disposition of breast cancer. Women with no family history are also suffering.
Moreover, women of African ancestry and racialized groups are being overlooked. They are predisposed to developing breast cancer under the age of 50, with more aggressive subtypes like triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) and diagnosed at later stages.
I AM A TRIPLE NEGATIVE BREAST CANCER SURVIVOR!
I ASKED FOR SCREENING AT 40 AND 42!
I WAS DIAGNOSED AT 44 WITH TNBC!
I WAS DENIED A MAMMOGRAM BECAUSE I WAS UNDER 50!
Canada lacks race-based data but the US data shows that black women are about 40% more likely to die of breast cancer than white women. Women (mainly black women) in Canada will continue to suffer with higher mortality rates because they are being screened too late and dying too soon.
The CTFPHC will be updating guidelines for cervical cancer sometime in 2023. I want to see the same for breast screening guidelines Nationwide so my daughter and the next generation get the best chance at life.
DON’T LET ANYMORE WOMEN DIE AN EARLY DEATH BECAUSE OF AN UNCHANGED/OUTDATED GUIDELINE!
