Paov,
On Friday, Prime Minister Trudeau will attend the G7 leaders’ summit in Hiroshima, Japan, and the stakes couldn’t be higher.
Record-breaking heat waves are causing chaos in Western Canada and around the world, underscoring the urgent need for world leaders to take immediate action on the climate crisis.
Trudeau is trying to position Canada as the climate leader of the group, dubbing the transition to clean energy "a once-in-a-generation opportunity,"1 but those words ring hollow in light of the federal government’s continued financial support for the fossil fuel industry.
The world will be watching this week so we have an opportunity to build serious pressure for real climate action. That’s why we’re launching a new petition today, calling on Prime Minister Trudeau and his cabinet ministers to end all public funding for Big Oil.
Thanks to pressure from people across the country, the Prime Minister has already promised to eliminate fossil fuel subsidies by the end of 2023, but he still hasn’t delivered. Instead, his government has created massive new subsidies for unproven and ineffective carbon capture technologies that Big Oil is using as cover to keep polluting.2
Canada and other G7 nations are responsible for most of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. They also have the most power and resources to lead the transition to clean energy. As the climate crisis accelerates, it’s crucial for citizens of wealthy countries like ours to demand decisive action from our leaders during this week’s summit.
Our 350.org colleagues in Japan are leading the way. Right now, people across Asia and worldwide are taking to the streets as part of a week of action calling on the Japanese government, as the host of the G7, to rise to the occasion and end all public financing for fossil fuels. Let’s build pressure on the Trudeau government to do the same.
In solidarity,
Amara
