Paov,
It’s been a heavy start to the week.
Most of Canada is currently under 'high' or 'extreme' fire risk warnings.1 Halifax has declared a state of emergency, after a rare spring wildfire forced thousands to evacuate and left behind a trail of destruction.2
And, last night, the United Conservative Party narrowly won a majority in the Alberta election, returning one of Big Oil’s staunchest allies to the Premier’s office after a campaign where both major parties barely mentioned the climate crisis.3
I’m not going to lie, Paov, this news has me feeling awful.
I feel heartbroken for my friends in Edmonton, who are facing four more years of a cruel government they don’t deserve. I’m scared for communities across the country, who are wondering if wildfires will be at their doorstep next.
But here’s what gives me hope: we’re not alone in this fight. Together, we will mourn, but we won’t give in to despair.
Next week, we have a great opportunity to showcase our movement’s power. Nearly 50,000 people have already joined the campaign for 100%... zero-emissions electricity across Canada by 2035. On Monday, the David Suzuki Foundation and allies will rally in Ottawa to deliver the petition and make our voices heard on Parliament Hill.
Paov, can you sign the petition now to help us send the strongest possible message on June 5?
Canada has committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions from electricity generation by 2035, but the fossil fuel industry and their allies are working overtime to delay action, create loopholes to keep gas plants running, and make sure their profits continue to soar.
On Monday, we’ll make it clear to the Trudeau government: stop letting Big Oil delay climate action. Sign and share the petition now to make your voice heard.
Thanks for taking action and for being part of this movement with me.
In solidarity,
Chris
