Dogwood News This Week: apocalyptic

Facebook AV/VR r1 Dogwood Your place for
news and action Friday June 9, 2023 It’s all over the news and social media: one of the most iconic cities in the world — NYC — looks apocalyptic with thick smoke filling the air.

Fossil fuel companies and politicians have derailed or ignored climate action for decades, despite knowing extreme weather events like persistent wildfires would become more frequent — and more deadly.

Fire “season” is arriving earlier and lasting longer because of emissions from just a few dozen fossil fuel companies. What’s worse, the CEOs of those companies actually have a seat at the table when governments discuss climate policy.

Wildfires are predicted to rage on throughout the summer. Environment Canada predicts it will be the worst year of burning... we’ve ever seen. Meanwhile, the B.C. government pushes ahead with its LNG agenda, propping up a fracked gas industry that is digging us even deeper into climate peril.

But organized movements are fighting back. This past week a movement of climate champions won its decades long battle to dislodge oil spill villain BP from arts and culture sponsorships. And in New York, where smoke is turning the air a foggy orange and people can’t leave their homes, the board chair of the Museum of Modern Art is being called to resign for getting rich off Coastal GasLink.

Big multi-billion dollar companies are also finally feeling the heat. Last week Enbridge made the last minute choice to pause another pipeline planned for Northern B.C.. Even coal giant Teck is trying to divide its company, separating coal mining from the rest of its business to “...create a company for investors who want a clean break from fossil fuels."

People like you aren’t letting oil companies or industry profiteers off the hook. As long as we hold strong and continue shining a light on climate criminals, we’ll see more and more corporations and stakeholders folding.

It’s working, but slowly. That’s why even while we watch cities fill with smoke, we can’t give up. There is no other option. Without resistance, oil industry execs will have free rein until the wells dry up. By then, we’ll all be on fire.

If you want to do something to help right away, join our June Frack Free BC organizing call. In it, you’ll find out what’s being done on the ground to stop dirty gas expansion in B.C. and what you can do to strengthen the fight for climate justice.
