This petition is to support P.E.I Premier, Dennis Kings, advocation for the Confederation Bridge toll to be lowered from $50.25 to $20. Right now they have... "frozen" the cost from the original plan for the toll to go up by $4.25 because of the P.E.I situation to help Island residents and businesses struggling to cope with high inflation and the damage caused by post-tropical storm Fiona last September. But, it is not enough, and Islanders aren’t able to afford inflation and traveling out of province. Mr. King claims "If you look at the cost of living in Prince Edward Island, it’s the highest in the country ... and one of the reasons why is that all of the goods that come to PE.I. come here on wheels, Mr. King had voiced his concern to lower the cost and come together with the federal government for an agreement but hadn’t heard back. "King said lowering the tolls is a matter of fairness, considering there are no tolls on other federally regulated bridges, including the relatively new Samuel De Champlain Bridge in Montreal, which carries far more traffic than the Confederation Bridge" (PE.I. premier asking Ottawa to reduce tolls for Confederation Bridge and ferry fares). So, lowering the price of the toll will not only help Islanders with the cost of living but also their mobility rights. We have the right to move freely and Canada can’t discriminate based on which province someone currently lives in. To conclude, we all have our own reasons to need/want to leave the Island but can’t without paying money to leave and we need to lower this price to help Islanders. All Islanders deserve to be able to travel for a reasonable cost. Please show your support for the premier’s request of an affordable bridge toll of $20.00 for Island residents by signing this petition.P.E.I Premier Opinion
