Dear Friend,
For over sixty years, the BCCLA has persisted in our fight to uphold freedom and justice for those most vulnerable to infringements on their human rights, dignity, and liberty.
From the worsening mass incarceration crisis to tragedies from police violence and the forced evictions of people experiencing homelessness - 2022 laid bare the deep, systemic inequities in our society. Throughout this all, our small but impactful team continued our fight to uphold freedom and justice.
Our 2022 Annual Report is here, with stories of the work for liberty and justice you helped make possible.
Read the 2022 Annual ReportIn 2022, our team worked alongside many communities in our pursuit of justice and equality.
We stood with land-defenders by calling out the RCMP’s Community-Industry Response Group,... and worked alongside East Coast Prison Justice Society to advocate for greater police accountability. We took on important cases and interventions relating to Conditional Sentencing Orders, online privacy, and mandatory minimum sentences, and supported sex workers in their fight for a safer sex industry.
Our team was also part of a powerful coalition demanding the Province of BC end its immigration detention agreement with Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA).
In July, we celebrated BC’s announcement to end its immigration detention agreement. In our Annual Report, BCCLA staff lawyer, Mara Selanders, writes:
“Immigration detainees are people who come to Canada seeking safety or a better life… In making their decision, the Province has prioritized the rights of detainees and acknowledged the atrocities they faced within this cruel, carceral system.”

As one of Canada’s oldest and most active defenders of civil liberties and human rights, we’ll be continuing our fight for justice for many years to come. Thank you for standing with us.
In solidarity,
