Dear Friend,
It’s my pleasure to share with you some big news. This month, the BCCLA is excited to welcome Liza Hughes (she/they), who will replace Joanne Macri as our Executive Director.
Liza is an advocate, educator, and activist. Her leadership style engages humility, integrity, and strong communication skills. Her legal talents have supported class action lawsuits and strategic litigation for prisoners and 2SLQBTQIA+ communities and families.
As an educator, Liza has developed curricula and systems that support community inclusion and violence prevention. She’s skilled at raising up community voices while creating systems that enhance the safety of those voices in public discourse and within formalized colonial structures.
In A Message to Community, Liza writes:
“The impactful, strategic work of the BCCLA is a tangible reminder of what is possible when bold vision meets compassionate collaboration.”
Read ‘A Message to Community’ from Liza Hughes, the new Executive Director of the... BCCLA.
We are heavy-hearted that this announcement also means the departure of former Executive Director Joanne Macri, who has left the BCCLA to provide care to a family member following a medical emergency. We recognize and value her contributions to the BCCLA, and she will be missed.
While we embark on a new chapter at a pivotal time of social and organizational change, we are confident Liza’s compassion and experience will guide her as she supports our talented staff while they continue our ground-breaking work for many years to come.
Please join the BCCLA Board and staff as we welcome Liza to our circle.
Karen Mirsky (she/her)
BCCLA President
