AHS is rescinding their continuous masking policy June 19 in the place where people should be the safest, hospitals.

This... short sighted decision will put patients and health care workers at a tremendously increased risk of preventable hospital acquired respiratory infections like SarsCoV2 (COVID).

COVID is far from over and moves through the air like smoke. Removing masks greatly increases the amount of virus in the air and will lead to increased infections for patients and staff, ultimately leading to increased hospitalizations, deaths, and further staffing shortages in a system that is already in crisis.

After 2-3 covid infections, current data shows;
2X increased risk of death
3X increased risk of hospitalization
2X increased risk of long covid
3X increased risk of heart issues and clotting disorders
(regardless of vaccine status)

Health care workers and institutions abdicating their duty to ‘do no harm’ and put the responsibility on the patient to protect themselves is not realistic in a healthcare setting. Patients who are unconscious, in respiratory distress, vomiting, or with mouth/nose/throat injuries can not ‘choose’ to mask.

Many people with complex medical conditions and disabilities puts them at an increased risk of severe COVID outcomes, regardless of vaccination status. It is AHS’ direct responsibility under a number of different Acts to protect all patients from preventable diseases. Removing masking directly contravenes those Acts and there is legal action being taken.

All Albertans deserve better leadership and better protection, especially the most vulnerable. Have your voice heard by signing and sharing this petition. Say NO to removing masks in healthcare.
