Paov,
Earth is heating up, fast. But our government isn’t just delaying climate action, they’re fuelling the fire.
Last week was the hottest ever recorded. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres called it another sign that “climate change is out of control,” and warned that, “If we persist in delaying key measures that are needed, I think we are moving into a catastrophic situation.”1
It’s frankly criminal that, as humanity faces this historic existential threat, Canada is still giving fossil fuel companies billions of dollars each year to extract more oil and gas.2
That’s why we have joined forces with Environmental Defence, The David Suzuki Foundation, and other allies to build massive pressure on the federal government to end fossil fuel subsidies once and for all.
Together, we’ve gathered tens of thousands of petition signatures and, in a couple of weeks, we’ll take action outside the offices of Prime Minister Trudeau and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland to deliver those signatures and send a powerful message that we will not tolerate their reckless climate delay.
Late last year, Minister of Environment and Climate Change Steven Guilbeault promised that the federal government would make good on its promise to end domestic fossil fuel subsidies by the middle of 2023.
Not only did the government miss that deadline last week, just as global heat records began to fall, this year they created new fossil fuel subsidies for false solutions like carbon capture and hydrogen, which will only serve to prop up Big Oil.
They’re counting on us to be too demoralized or distracted to hold them accountable. They’re intentionally dragging out the process and debating “efficient” vs “inefficient” subsidies while the world burns. But this isn’t complicated, Paov, every cent we allow our government to give to these companies makes the climate crisis worse.
Onwards,
Amara
