It has been more than 20 years since the Supreme Court of Canada heard Sue Rodriguez’s plea for justice. In 1993, in a divided 5-4 decision, the Court upheld the law that criminalizes doctors for assisting the sick and dying. Since that time, there has been a sea change in thinking on this issue. Many countries now allow for assisted dying. Their experience reveals that the fears are unfounded.
As long as Canadian law continues to prohibit physician assistance in dying, seriously ill Canadians will suffer against their will. It’s time for Canada to adopt a new approach to dying that respects compassionate choice.
On Wednesday, October 15, 2014 the BC Civil Liberties Association, with our amazing team of clients and pro bono counsel, will take the right to die with dignity case to the Supreme Court of Canada. This is a legal battle we have been fighting for more than four years.
Join us in this historic moment by taking action to show your support for compassion and choice at the end of life.
