System Change December Call: Ferguson and beyond

System Change December Call: Ferguson and beyond r1 ... System Change Not Climate Change news. r33

Solidarity with Ferguson

November was a month of unparalleled resistance to racist police violence. The killing of unarmed black teenager Mike Brown by white police officer Darren Wilson in Ferguson, Missouri on August 8 had galvanized outrage at a system that condoned such killings and was only strengthened by at least four similar examples in St. Louis, New York City, and Cleveland in the interim. When the long-awaited decision of the grand jury to not indict Wilson was announced on November 24, the mainstream media chose to focus on the looting and burning of businesses that boiled over in response to this deeply flawed process. But they largely ignored the much more significant response of the committed and disciplined movement that had arisen in Ferguson during those three-and-a-half months. Led by activists like Deray McKesson (@deray), this multi-racial, multi-generational movement has drawn up a sophisticated list of demands and has organized an extraordinary array of actions around the St. Louis area, inspiring support actions in hundreds of cities in the US and around the world. They understand the systemic nature of the racism they are confronting, and they show no signs of going away.

We in System Change not Climate Change recognize that the struggle of of these activists for racial justice is part of a larger fight against a political and economic system that has ecological disaster as one of its consequences. We stand in solidarity with the Ferguson movement; we owe them a huge debt for the stand they are taking.
