Trade negotiators were hoping they could sign away our rights in secret trade deals starting THIS week.
But they weren't counting on us finding out about the talks. We want to launch a headline grabbing stunt to draw attention to the talks, but we need your help to make it happen at such short notice.
Will you chip in CA$25 to help us bring attention to the final secret TPP talks?
Paov,
Will 2015 be the year we sign away the right to protect our environment, set the prices of medication and defend workers from exploitation? That’s what trade negotiators preparing to meet in Washington this week could agree to -- but it’s not too late to stop them.
This week, chief negotiators from the countries in the Trans-Pacific Partnership -- or the TPP -- are expected to sit down to try and hammer out the biggest trade deal the world has ever seen. If they succeed, it could spell disaster for our environment, internet freedoms and affordable healthcare.
The negotiators are counting on keeping a low profile to get the deal through - a similar deal between the US and EU is being derailed because of public pressure.
So we need to work fast to make sure the world’s media hear about what’s happening in Washington, to put politicians under pressure to ditch the deal.
Negotiators are trying pretty much everything to make sure the TPP negotiations stay out of the media. They keep the dates and locations of the talks secret until the last minute -- and sometimes change plans just before they start to throw their opponents off the scent.
We can’t match the budget of the governments and corporate lobbyists pushing for this deal. But we do have something they don’t: hundreds of thousands of people willing to get behind the campaign to drop the TPP, and prepared to throw their support into a campaign to stop it.
Now, we need to work together to show the negotiators at the talks that we’re not going to go away -- and that the longer they keep pushing for this deal, the louder our voices will become.
Thanks for all you do,
Jon and the team at SumOfUs
