We got the call! The death with dignity decision is coming
The BC Civil Liberties Association has just received word that the Supreme Court of Canada will release a ruling in our historic death with dignity case, Carter v. Canada, this Friday February 6, 2015.
What an incredible journey it has been to get to this day.

In 2011 the BCCLA launched a lawsuit to challenge the laws that criminalize doctors for helping competent, seriously ill individuals who wish to hasten death. Since then, the Carter family, the Taylors, the Shaprays, and many other courageous Canadians have joined us in the fight to achieve compassionate choice at the end of life. Meet the people behind this case here.
Together, we’ve shepherded this case through a watershed victory at the BC Supreme Court, and all the way to the Supreme Court of Canada. You can read more about the history of the case here on our timeline.
On Friday, we will be in Ottawa to receive the Court’s judgment. We are optimistic that this ruling will mark a new day for sick and dying Canadians, and a victory for autonomy at the end of life. Whatever the ruling, this case has helped spark an exceptionally important national conversation. We know now that the vast majority of Canadians support the right of individuals to make their own choices about end of life care, without the harsh intervention of the criminal law.
The BCCLA and the Carter family are headed to Ottawa tomorrow. We want to thank you all for the overwhelming support you have shown this case, and we hope you will join us via Twitter and Facebook as we prepare for this important day.
