WIN! National Energy Board agrees to extend deadline for applications to Energy East... pipeline review

Last week, the Council of Canadians Winnipeg and Quill Plains chapters, along with the Council of Canadians national office, wrote to the National Energy Board to demand a two week extension to their March 3rd deadline for submitting applications for the review process on the Energy East pipeline.


Thunder Bay chapter asks city council to oppose Energy East pipeline

The Council of Canadians Thunder Bay chapter has asked their city council to oppose the Energy East pipeline.


Council of Canadians at "Prentice look in the mirror" rally in Edmonton

The Council of Canadians participated in a "Prentice look in the mirror" rally at the Alberta legislature today. Edmonton-based Prairies-Northwest Territories organizer Aleah Loney and United Nurses of Alberta president (and Council of Canadians Board member) Heather Smith joined more than a hundred people to draw attention to Alberta premier Jim Prentice's recent comment and to warn against cuts to public services.


ICSID awards $17.3 million to oil companies in NAFTA challenge

The Council of Canadians first spoke against a North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) investor-state challenge by Texas-based Exxon Mobil Corp. and Louisiana-based Murphy Oil Corporation in September 2007. In a joint media release with the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union (now Unifor), we stated this challenge was an attack on Canadian sovereignty.
