We've achieved so much. We now have 12 months to defend our hard-won gains for human rights at the end of life.
Dear PAOV,
On Thursday, 150 of our friends and supporters gathered in Vancouver to commemorate BCCLA’s historic victory in Carter v. Canada, the death with dignity case. We have much to celebrate, but our work is far from over: within 12 months, the government will decide how the Supreme Court's ruling will be reflected in law. We need to make sure they get it right.
At Thursday’s event, our generous supporters blasted past our initial fundraising goal of $30,000. We are now within shooting distance of our next fundraising milestone of $60,000 to launch the second phase of the fight for death with dignity.
Share this powerful video: This Ruling Changes Everything
Last Thursday was an important evening marking a milestone in civil liberties history in Canada, and an opportunity to premiere a short documentary film showcasing this hard-won victory by acclaimed filmmaker Kevin Eastwood. We’d like to share the film with all our supporters who couldn’t join us; you can watch it by clicking on the image above.
If you care about the rights of seriously and incurably ill Canadians as much as we do, we ask that you share this powerful video with at least three people in your life and start a conversation about why you believe that self-determination and compassionate care at the end of life are vital human rights that must be defended.
Your friends and loved ones can stay up to date with the BCCLA's ongoing fight for death with dignity, including the release of the forthcoming feature-length documentary on the issue, by signing up for our email news here: bccla.org/carter-email-updates.
Today, Let's Make This Right a Reality
We are so close to gathering the support we need from our community to embark on the next vital phase of this work. Together we can ensure that seriously and incurably ill Canadians have the choices and rights that they deserve.
Sincerely,
Josh Paterson, Executive Director
and the BCCLA team
