CFS-BC launch "Don't Close the Doors" campaign in support of Adult Basic Education

Adult Basic Education (ABE) has been tuition-free in BC since 2007. On December 4th, 2014, the provincial government announced a plan to cut $6.9 million from Adult Basic Education programming in BC and removed the tuition-free ABE mandate. This short-sighted plan will hurt our economy and fuel inequality.

In response, the Canadian Federation of Students - British Columbia (CFS-BC) has launched the Don't Close the Doors campaign, which is looking to rally support. Please take a moment to visit their campaign website and send Premier Clark a message before it’s too late!

And if you want to come to BC's Legislature on May 4th to show your support, here's your chance! The Federation of Post-Secondary Educators of BC (FPSE) is supporting efforts to bring activists, faculty and students concerned about cuts to ABE funding to the Legislature in Victoria on Monday May 4th, where at 11 AM the Official Opposition will put forward a motion calling on the government to restore funding for ABE. If you'd like to attend the session to show your support, please This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. right away!

Get ready for the 2015 May Day March and Rally!

On May 1st, workers around the world will be celebrating their rights. This year, the Vancouver May Day Rally will have a focus on the Fight for $15, and is being co-sponsored by the BC Federation of Labour and the Vancouver and District Labour Council.

Meet up at Clark Park (Commercial Drive and 14th Avenue) between 5 and 5:30pm. We will march together to Grandview Park for a rally. After the rally head over to the Wise Hall (1882 Adanac Street) for music and refreshments.

For more information please visit the event's page here.

Spring into Action for Child Care

The Coalition of Child Care Advocates of BC is part of an exciting Canada-wide week of action for child care, from May 10th to 17th. Spring into Action for Child Care is an opportunity to raise child care as an issue and to gain support for our vision of child care.

Together, we can make child care visible in our communities by participating in events - large and small - like stroller brigades (Lower Mainland, May 9), picnics, information booths or town hall meetings.

Click here to RSVP on the Child Care Week of Action events page to receive information about events happening in your area. If you'd like to organize an event, contact us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

The Case for Increasing the Minimum Wage

In this new report by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, Economist David A. Green, a professor and former chair of the Vancouver School of Economics at UBC and an International Fellow at the Institute for Fiscal Studies in London, presents his thorough review of academic research on the economic impacts of minimum wages, and concludes that bold increases to the minimum wage make good economic sense. You can read the full report here.

Join the Petition to End the Government Assisted Refugee Transportation Loan

As part of its international humanitarian commitment, Canada sponsors Government Assisted Refugees (GAR) that are in urgent need of protection. These refugees are referred by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees based on Canadian targets and criteria, and are selected abroad for resettlement.

Astoundingly, Canada is the only country worldwide that issues interest bearing loans to these refugees to cover their pre-entry medical examination and transportation costs to resettle in the country.

Please sign the petition and join the efforts of the Surrey Poverty Reduction Coalition and the City of Surrey to ask the federal government to terminate this shameful practice.
