24 hours to stop one of the most dangerous mines in Canada.

SHD Hi PAOV,

My name is Daniel Code. I’m one of the film producers and cinematographers at SHD.

The first time I volunteered with SHD was in the fall of 2014. We had been asked to help expose the largest mining disaster in Canadian history. We snuck into the site of the Imperial Metals Mount Polley Mine in northern British Columbia to document the supposed ‘cleanup’ of their toxic waste spill. I was blown away by the scar it had left on the environment and local communities. The earth was barren and cracked, like the set of a sci-fi movie I had once worked on. I felt hopeless. If this was the way we are doing things now, what will our children face in the future?

In that moment I realized how important it was for me to just listen to the stories of those the disaster had actually affected first hand. I was really proud of the video we made.

Now they’re trying to re-open the mine, but there’s still 24 hours to make your voice heard!

For a number of years I’ve worked in the film and television industry on award winning music videos, web series and reality tv shows. While some of videos I created or worked on did entertain an audience, I never felt that these videos were making a greater impact in the world. The thing that hurt me so much was that I felt misguided. Was this really the exciting world of TV that everyone was talking about?

I decided to take a leap of faith and leave my comfortable TV job and see if my skills could be utilized to help some of the marginalized communities that have been affected by issues such as climate change and racism. SHD has provided me with a crash course in activism, and at times I am very much out of my comfort zone. With every project we undertake, I gain a greater sensitivity to the needs of these impacted communities, and a deeper understanding of the way my talents can help create an atmosphere of compassion.

With the federal election right around the corner I’m now on a short term contract coordinating a production that involves some of the finest independent artists in the country. Our ever expanding network of comedians, filmmakers, and musicians are creating an arsenal of hard-hitting content that compiles years of SHD actions and interviews.

Thanks to nearly 400 donors across the country we’re now more than 50% of the way to our crowdfunding goal. Can you chip in to help us get ready for the 2015 election?

With hope,

Daniel, SHD.ca
