Yemen Conflict with Infographics of Numbers

Ruba Aleryani, a Yemeni student at Brown University, has creatively presented Yemen's catastrophe in eye catching and simple infographics while naming her source. Ruba is a 20 year old, double majoring in Development Studies and Middle East Studies and living in the U.S. She describes herself in her Twitter bio as an aspiring writer and photographer, often uses the hashtag #YemenInNumbers in her tweets to highlight what her country is facing after a month of war. She uses art to shed light on the untapped––whether it is using data visualisations to expose the humanitarian situation in Yemen or using photography and film to cast a different perspective on the country.

Arab coalition forces, led by Saudi Arabia, have been pounding Yemen with airstrikes since March 26. Their assault has not been limited to military sites or their main target, Houthi tribal fighters, who took control of Yemen's capital Sana'a from President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi in January.

There is also massive destruction in the southern port city Aden, where the Houthis have been pushing their response, along with forces loyal to Yemen's former president, Ali Abdullah Saleh.

Saleh stepped down after three decades as president following popular protests in 2011, and handed power to Hadi through a deal brokered by the Gulf Cooperation Council, led by Saudi Arabia. The same countries are currently bombing Yemen. Saleh still controls most of Yemen's army units and wields influence in the world's poorest Arab country.

Ruba started on April 7 with these tweets before the number of casualties doubled. At least 1,244 people have been killed, according to figures compiled by UNHCO from health facilities and 5,044 people have been injured:
